- Arthur Rosenthal, Academic Book Publisher, Dies at 93. “Mr. Rosenthal, who founded Basic Books in 1952, let his taste in nonfiction and his quasi indifference to profit margins guide him as a publisher.” TLB: Ah, Rosenthal. He was a brilliant publisher, particularly of HUP. But, why, oh why, do these sorts of pieces always seemingly extoll a book publishing executive who exercised quasi indifference to profit margins? In what other domain of for-profit endeavor would we similarly wax fondly over a CEO’s indifference (always hints at outright disdain) for profits? YB: My theories: 1) Perhaps it’s that we rarely get a chance in other domains of for-profit endeavor 🙂 2) When we do get a chance (e.g., the Malden Mills fellow), I’m pretty sure their obits will read similarly. 3) It’s probably also a reflection of the fact that many people think that good books generate positive social externalities. TLB: I just tried to buy my groceries with positive social externalities and got thrown out of the super market.
