A sweet NY Times article about Old Friends, a “retirement home” for thoroughbred horses. On my spring 2009 Heartland Tour I got to visit Old Friends with family friend Mary Simon, author of Racing Through the Century. Here’s what she writes in follow-up to the NYT article:
Ahem, I’m the one who first alerted Michael Blowan that Tour of the Cat was racing very cheaply and in the hands of a well-known butcher/trainer. The campaign to bring the horse home to a happy retirement then caught fire on Face Book. Then Maggie Moss showed up … and yay! The deed was done. I feel like Tour is kind of “my” boy.
A great story!
I think I was the first to mention him to Michael early in 2009, but my involvement ended there–except for occasional hand-wringing and worrying. Thank goodness there are people like Michael Blowan, Maggie Moss, and all those Face-Bookers who worked so hard to acquire this wonderful old warrior and retire him to the best home he could ever know.
Thank you Mary,…. for helping Tour of the Cat !
